The nights people come back for

Thursday is where beginners land. Eight seats, no charge, somebody from the floor sitting in for as long as it takes.

Friday is the rotation. The bell goes at twenty past, at the hour and at forty past, and half of every table shifts along — you end the night having played with strangers who are not strangers now.

Sunday afternoons belong to the mahjong crowd, who arrived once as a group of four and now fill three tables and bring their own tea.
